CEBU CITY- University of the Visayas advanced to the Finals of the 2013 Enervon-Cesafi Partner’s Cup after routing Cebu Institute of Technology, 83-67, in the semifinals late Thursday night at the Cebu Coliseum.
It was the Green Lancers’ second straight win in the single round-robin semis as they became the first team to advance TO the championship round.
The other Finals berth will be disputed by the Wildcats and University of San Carlos, which earned the right to play CIT in a sudden-death game after destroying University of Cebu, 116-84, in the day’s other games.
The Lancers began to pull away in the second period when they outscored the Wildcats 26-15, behind the perimeter shooting of John Abad, who scored three three-pointers during that stretch to give them a 41-25 halftime lead.
CIT tried to put up a fight by trimming the deficit to just nine in the third period, but UV’s big men were simply too tough to handle with Wowie Escosio and African import Steve Akomo combining for 14 points in the final period.
Abad and Escosio each had 17 points to pace the Lancers, while Akomo had 16 and Vincent Mendoza 14.
Joshua dela Cerna had 17 points but the Wildcats failed to get enough scoring mileage from Floyd Taboada and Vincent Menguito.
Earlier, five Warriors scored in double-figures led by Stephen Que who had 22 as San Carlos played without star import Arnaud Noah, who was suspended for one game after getting ejected in the Warriors’ last game.
