THIS is one case where a veteran who had an expiring contract didn’t have a hard time signing a new one.
While most veterans with expired contracts were left without teams, Ronjay Buenafe found it relatively easy to sustain his career after signing a deal with Blackwater.
The 33-year-old shooting guard was listed as part of the Elite’s 16-man opening-day roster for the Philippine Cup.
“Signed to a contract na si Ronjay,” Elite coach Leo Isaac said of the incoming 10th-year veteran.
After averaging career lows in all statistical categories last season, Buenafe looked like he was also going to have a hard time signing a new contract, and true enough, he failed to land one at Phoenix, which promptly released him for his benefit.
“After (his) contract expired, we allowed him to try out with other teams para ‘di maipit,” Phoenix coach Ariel Vanguardia said.
Luckily, Buenafe found a team in the Elite, where he tries to revive his career and fight for minutes in a shallow two-spot rotation that only has James Forrester.
