PAPOT Paredes got a fitting send-off to his bachelorship days on Friday after playing significant minutes in Globalport’s 110-96 rout of NLEX in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The former La Salle stalwart shot 6 of 7 from the field in his 16-minute stint on the floor. He finished with 13 points and six rebounds in one of his best games as a pro that came a week before he marries longtime sweetheart Kiara.
Paredes, a second round pick (15th overall) of Barako Bull in the 2014 rookie draft, will miss the Batang Pier’s next outing against San Miguel Beer in Cebu on January 21, which happens to be his wedding day.
Of course, the wedding – which is one year in the making - can’t be put off.
“Hindi ko alam talaga na San Miguel (game) pagtingin ko sa schedule na-shock ako,” said Paredes. “Tapos sa Cebu pa which is hindi talaga makakapunta yung mga teammates ko.”
Globalport coach Franz Pumaren, who handled Paredes during his stint with the Philippine Youth team and La Salle, will stand as one of his godfathers while teammate Gab Banal is likewise part of the entourage.
He doesn’t expect either of the two to make one of the most important moments of his life, but Paredes certainly understands, especially with the Batang Pier up against the two-time all-Filipino Cup reigning champion.
“He’ll (Pumaren) be proxied na lang. And he can’t missed that game naman because it’s very important din,” said Paredes.
The honeymoon will have to wait too, according to Papot, as after the San Miguel game, Globalport returns to action the following Wednesday against TnT Katropa.
“Wala muna (honeymoon). Kasi after that we have a game din on Wednesday. So I’ll be back in practice sa Monday kaagad,” said the three-year pro.
His would-be wife is not complaining, though.
“Hindi naman, she understands naman,” said a smiling Paredes. “Probably after the conference na siguro.”
