JONG Uichico is set to take over the reins of Talk 'N Text, former Texters coach Norman Black is bound for Meralco while Ryan Gregorio will take a new career path under a major coaching shuffle of the three PBA teams of the Manny V. Pangilinan bloc, a source told Spin.ph.
Uichico, winner of eight league championships, is set to take on the job of reviving the fortunes of a Talk 'N Text team that failed to win a league title this season while Black will be tasked to bring life to Meralco team that has yet to make a trip to the finals.
On the other hand, Gregorio, a three-time PBA Coach of the Year awardee, is expected to step in a new direction by focusing on his corporate career at Meralco after the coaching shuffle that was first reported by Spin.ph on Tuesday night.
Gregorio is currently assistant vice president of Meralco and head of its sports youth advocacy but is expected to be promoted to a higher management position once he steps down as Bolts head coach.
The coaching shuffle is expected to involve other members of the coaching staff and management of the Talk 'N Text, Meralco, and new ballclub NLEX, although final details are still being ironed out in a meeting of top officials of the MVP group that is ongoing at posting time.
A media announcement is expected to be made after the meeting.
One major detail that is still to be ironed out is the status of Boyet Fernandez, who led NLEX to six championships in the D-League and is being eyed to hold the same position in the pro ranks.
However, Fernandez is also committed to coaching NCAA champion San Beda, which, like Ateneo, is also backed by Pangilinan.
“Doon kasi nagkakaroon ng inhibitions ang management, may mabigat na role na kailangang gampanan si Boyet sa San Beda. Kaya hindi mapagdesisyunan kung PBA na ba siya o NCAA pa,” said a source inside the MVP camp.
Among the assistant coaches, Nash Racela, currently an assistant at Meralco, is set to return to Talk 'N Text where he will join holdovers Joshua Reyes and Jamike Jarin while Black's chief assistant Sandy Arespacochaga will either go to Meralco or NLEX.
Black is expected to retain the coaching staff of Grgeorio, made up of Ronnie Magsanoc, Xavy Nunag and Patrick Fran.
However, another source expects changes to be made during the final meeting before Pangilinan signs the appointment papers.
