JONG Uichico was happy to be reunited with his former player Danny Ildefonso at Meralco, nearly two months since recommending to head coach Ryan Gregorio to tap the services of the 15-year veteran.
If there’s one man at Meralco who knows what Ildefonso can bring to the table, it’s no one else but Uichico as the two won six championships from 1999 to 2005 during their time together at San Miguel Beer.
“He's (Ildefonso) in shape saka experienced naman siya,” Uichico told Spin.ph after the team's practice at the Meralco gym on Friday.
Given the Bolts' injury-riddled roster in the PLDT myDSL-Philippine Cup, Uichico believes the entry of Ildefonso can make the team more efficient in more ways than one.
“Definitely, he'll provide experience and he'll make the game more efficient for the team. Efficient in the sense that he can make the right decisions come game time,” explained the one-time Coach of the Year.
Uichico, who currently handles the defensive schemes of the team, feels the vast basketball knowledge of Ildefonso can serve him well in making a smooth transition to the Bolts camp.
“Siya na ang mag-a-adjust sa team. Siyempre, iba ang mentality niya at kakayahan niya. But so far, he'll be the backup at the frontline,” he added.
Ildefonso is set to play his very first game as a Meralco player on Saturday when the Bolts play the Air21 Express.
The Bolts are trying to snap out of a four-game stupor.
