SAN Miguel Beer bombarded GlobalPort from long range as it regained its bearings with a 120-109 victory to get on the winning track in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Friday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The Beermen fired a league-season-high 19 triples, seven coming from import Tyler Wilkerson en route to exploding for a another league-season-best 52 points to lead the Philippine Cup champions to their first win after starting the midseason tournament on the wrong foot.
SMB also kept the Batang Pier from getting a winning streak as its victims fell to an even 2-2 win-loss record.
“We were really pressured to get our first win,” SMB coach Leo Austria admitted. “But what more can you ask for? Talagang nagpaulan sila ng tres.”
The Beermen thus matched their second most three-pointers in one game in franchise history, a feat that was also sixth best in the league.
Wilkerson sparked the blowout, waxing hot from deep while also making a presence down low as he scattered all but three of his total scoring output in the first three quarters.
Marcio Lassiter was also on target as he accounted for eight of SMB’s treys to finish with 28 points, while Alex Cabagnot, who had three triples, punctuated the blowout by scoring nine of his 12 points in the finale frame.
Calvin Warner tallied 27 points, while Terrence Romeo added 22 markers in a lonsing effort for the Batang Pier, who missed Stanely Pringle early in the fourth quarter after going down with a sprained ankle.
