JUNEL Baculi hopes Globalport’s new 'Twin Towers' combination of import Justin Williams and Japeth Aguilar will do wonders for a franchise that won just once in its inaugural showing in the PBA.
Having seen Aguilar involve himself in drills during his first official practice with the Batang Pier, the Globalport mentor was definitely impressed with the conditioning and defensive presence of the gangling 6-foot-9 center from Lubao, Pampanga.
“Now we have parang twin towers in Justin Williams and Japeth Aguilar, and definitely we will capitalize on that both offensively and defensively,” said a beaming Baculi.
While Aguilar averaged just 6.64 points, 4.21 rebounds, and 1.34 blocks in 15.42 minutes last season with Talk 'N Text, Baculi said his 26-year-old forward could expect his minutes to shoot up for the team in the Commissioner’s Cup starting this Friday.
“Japeth was a role player sa Talk 'N Text because they have established players, pero dito starter siya. It's a new atmosphere for him but hopefully, he could adapt at such a short period of time,” explained Baculi, whose team will be tested right on opening day when the Batang Pier take on the Petron Boosters.
The new Globalport coach said chemistry still remains an issue for his team due to the pre-conference acquisition of Sol Mercado and Kelly Nabong from Meralco in a multi-player trade last week.
But he is glad that veterans Gary David and Willie Miller are making the transition of the new players a lot smoother.
