Yeng Guiao says Rain or Shine needs tweaking of system - not a roster change

IT seems Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao’s trade scare remained just that: a scare.

The fiery mentor stressed that tweaking the roster is not on the agenda after the Elasto Painters once again fell short of reaching their ultimate goal in the PBA.

“I’m always careful in terms of disrupting the team that we have, not unless there is a talent that is available, that is suitable to our system, and that will not entail complicated maneuvers,” Guiao said after the Elasto Painters lost to Alaska, 79-76, in Game Six on Sunday.

“Kung hindi naman, we’d rather stay with what we have,” he was quick to add. “(Trading is) not a priority. All we need is a good import and we’ll keep battling and keep making adjustments with the personnel we have.”

The Painters are looking to bring back Wayne Chism to reinforce them in the Commissioner’s Cup.

Guiao said Chism’s availability will be known on Tuesday. The 27-year-old power forward currently plays for Israeli club Hapoel Gilboa Galil, where he has a one-year contract, which, Guiao said, he can opt out of.

“I felt we had a good conference with him kaya binabalik namin,” the RoS coach said of Chism, who led the Painters to a Final Four stint in the last Commissioner’s Cup.

“Ang dami naming mga injuires noon but we still fought with him. He was also injured and he was fighting hard for the team. That’s’ the quality that convinced me that we can give him a second chance.”

After falling short yet again in his bid for a first-ever career all-Filipino championship, Guiao said he believes it’s not the players that need a change.

“We will make an evaluation from the coaching staff point of view of where we need to improve, what adjustments we need to make in terms of system, in terms of creating some new look, in terms of our offense and defense.”

After all, what they’ve been doing may be enough to allow the Painters to reach the semifinals the last five and six of the last seven conferences, but it has hardly been sufficient to enable them to duplicate their first and only title in the 2012 Governors’ Cup.

“We’ve been consistent. We’ve been making the semifinals,” Guiao said. “But our purpose is to not just make the semifinals — our purpose is to win a championship.

“As long as we’re not winning a championship, we will not be happy and will not settle and we will not be satisfied.”

“We will prepare for the next conference, but we don’t want to forget the lessons of this conference,” he added.
