TELEVISION host Ginger Conejero has stood by boyfriend Alex Cabagnot in the face of his struggles while making the transition from the San Miguel/ Petron ballclub to new team GlobalPort.
Conejero, a former Miss Earth runner-up and now a popular broadcaster and host of giant television network ABS-CBN, stood witness to the difficult adjustment period Cabagnot had to go through after being traded by Petron to GlobalPort for Sol Mercado.
“Of course, you go through your time of adjustment. It’s a different journey, you adjust to every team you play,” Conejero told Spin.ph, assessing the six-foot Cabagnot’s first conference with GlobalPort.
Cabagnot has struggled in his first seven games with the Batang Pier, averaging career-lows of 7.7 points on 28 percent shooting from the field. He was in fact even called out by GlobalPort's rookie coach, Pido Jarencio, to step up at one point in the team's 0-8 campaign in the PBA Commissioner's Cup.
However, Conejero said he never lost faith in her boyfriend, knowing how he puts his mind into everything he sets out to do.
“I’m not saying this just because he’s my boyfriend, but he’s really one of the most hardworking people I know. And if we ever talk about it (basketball), siyempre, you want to win, pero darating din 'yan, pana panahon lang 'yan,” she said.
“I try to be as supportive in that way.”
Cabagnot's persistence has since paid off. The former University of Hawaii-Hilo standout broke out with his finest game for GlobalPort last week, scoring 29 points to go with six rebounds and seven assists in the team’s 91-92 loss to Talk ‘N Text.
Two days later, Cabagnot had 14 points, six rebounds, nine assists and four steals to help GlobalPort close out the conference on a winning note - a 98-96 victory over Barako Bull.
If all, Cabagnot’s last two games saw him average 21.5 points, 8.0 assists, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals, which augur well for the veteran playmaker in GlobalPort's campaign in the Governors Cup.
