TROY Rosario was admonished by TNT coaches for his defense. He responded with a late show on defense.
The Gilas Pilipinas mainstay scored 17 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter, helping the KaTropa pull off a 103-100 win over a brave NorthPort side and stay unbeaten through five games in the PBA Governors Cup.
The TNT forward said he took it upon himself to take over on offense after getting an earful from the coaching staff about his defensive lapses.
“Kailangan na ako ng team eh,” Rosario said. “Hindi maganda ‘yung offense ko nung first three quarters. Kailangan ko na talagang bumawi. Ang dami kong breakdowns sa depensa. Kung maririnig niyo kanina, talagang ako ang inaano ni coach kanina kasi ako ‘yung may breakdown sa depensa. Kailangan ko bumawi sa opensa.”
Rosario did just that, stringing up six straight points that cut TNT’s deficit to one point, 84-83. He later unloaded a three-pointer that turned out to be the marginal basket with 1:06 left, 101-100.
Despite the win, the former National University star is worried about his defensive shortcomings as well as the team defense of TNT, which has given up 100 points or more in all but one game in the Governors’ Cup.
“Bukas, magpa-practice kami para makita namin ‘yung breakdowns na nagawa namin sa game na ‘to, pag-aaralan namin para mag-improve kami sa next games namin,” said Rosairo. “’Yung last two minutes lang kami nanalo sa depensa."
