IS something bothering Calvin Abueva?
Just days after his axing from the Gilas 15-man pool, the enigmatic forward wasn’t fielded by coach Alex Compton in the first half of the Aces’ PBA Philippine Cup game against Blackwater on Saturday.
Fans saw Abueva warming up before the game at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, but was nowhere to be found later at the Alaska bench when the match was finally ongoing.
According to a courtside report, Abueva talked to coach Alex Compton that he will not suit up against the Elite owing to a 'personal matter.'
Compton later disclosed Abueva did seek his permission about not playing against the Elite.
“Alaska has always been family. I would never get in the way of somebody who’s taking care of something that’s important to their family,” said Compton in the post-game interview.
“With their family, I hope you guys would appreciate the private and internal nature of that.”
Compton did not elaborate on what has been bothering Abueva, who, on Monday, was dropped by coach Chot Reyes from the Gilas Pilipinas pool along with Raymund Almazan for failing to attend the weekly practices.
Abueva has also skipped some of the Aces’ practices the past few days, Compton disclosed.
“He was here, and I’ll be the same way with my family. If something happens, I’m gone,” said the Alaska mentor.
“That’s just not a question. We’re family first over franchise. And that’s one of the things that make me proud of being part of Alaska, things that Fred (Uytengsu) and Alaska stood for.”
Compton however, could not be certain until when Abueva would be out for the team.
Good thing, the Aces still managed to beat Blackwater in Abueva’s absence, 88-84, to improve their record at 3-2 and stretch their winning streak to three.
