ADD Jason Maxiell to the list of NBA veterans who is bound to play in the PBA.
After Ivan Johnson, Al Thornton, and Othyus Jeffers recently, the 10-year NBA vet could be Tropang TNT’s import for the PBA Governors’ Cup.
Texters coach Jong Uichico confirmed the development on Tuesday, saying they have been in talks with the longtime Detroit Pistons power forward, revealing him as their first-choice reinforcement.
“We’re trying (to sign him),” Uichico said after Gilas Pilipinas’ tune-up game against Iran at Hoops Center. “Hopefully he arrives this week."
Uichico cited the rebounding prowess of the 33-year-old Maxiell, who averaged 4.2 caroms in an NBA career that also had stops at Charlotte and Orlando, as the Texters’ need.
“We hope he fits the role we need from an import,” the TNT coach said.
Maxiell, who last played in the Chinese Basketball Association, is listed at 6-7, but Uichico is confident the import will make the 6-foot-5 cut once he get measured at the PBA office.
“Listed and actual are two different things, with shoes or without shoes,” Uichico said. “Maybe he’s listed at that but with shoes.”
