Trevis Simpson rues timing of groin injury against Star: ‘I actually thought that we would win it’

TREVIS Simpson rued the timing of his injury that factored heavily in Blackwater’s 103-86 loss to Star in the PBA Governors’ Cup on Sunday night.

The Elite were trailing by just five points, when their import hurt his groin with only 24 seconds gone by in the payoff period, forcing him to stay out and watch his team suffer a second successive blowout defeat after a 107-78 setback at the hands of Phoenix.

“The first game, they punched us in the mouth. We weren’t ready at all, but I liked our effort this game,” Simpson said. “I actually thought that we would win it. I felt like if we could keep the game close late in the fourth quarter against a team like that puts more pressure on them to win than it is for us.”

“They can make a mistake late and we can hit a couple shots, and the game could’ve gone either way, but my injury kind of hurt the team,” the UNC Greensboro product added.

Simpson finished with 24 points eight boards, three steals, and two assists before going out with the injury after just 28 minutes of play.

“I made a move – a move I’ve made a thousand times – and I just stopped to pass the ball and I just felt a small pop, and I knew immediately something was wrong,” the 25-year-old cager said. “Hopefully it’s just a strain and I can do better within the next couple of days,” he added. “I’ll get it checked tomorrow.”

Still, Simpson expressed confidence after putting up a valiant stand against the perennial-contending Hotshots.

“For sure,” Simpson said. “I know this is a good team we just played. And to be down three or so before I got hurt, that’s huge confidence. I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t be confident especially after how we got beat in the first game.”
