Transition team to run PBA affairs as Narvasa set to step down, says source

    Dec 14, 2017

A TEAM made up of representatives from two warring factions in the board has started running the affairs of the PBA as the pro league moves on from one of the worst periods in its 43-year history.

The transition team will take over from commissioner Chito Narvasa, who has been asked to step down under an agreement by the two rival groups that will pave the way for the opening of the new PBA season as scheduled on Sunday.

Sources told SPIN.ph Narvasa will make his resignation official in the first playdates of the new year, by which time the chairmanship of the PBA will also be passed from GlobalPort owner Mikee Romero to a representative of NLEX.

Even before that, the transition team, sources bared, will already oversee the day-to-day running of the league, whose season came close to being shelved as groups in disagreement over the continued tenure o Narvasa refused to budge.

The breakthrough arrangement led to the holding of the pre-season media conference on Wednesday at Okada Manila.

Already, Narvasa's functions appeared to have been reduced to ceremonial during the media launch.

Unlike the past two seasons when he ran the show during the preseason event, the controversial commissioner mostly stayed in the background, fielded just one question, and didn't join the board of governors in the traditional ceremonies.

While an uneasy peace prevails in the board, its members are in a rush to hammer out the rest of the details for the new season, from the opening ceremonies on Sunday to the games.
