Terrence Jones attacked early and scored 41 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the KaTropa to open the best-of-seven championship series with the 1-0 lead.
Jones had 16 points in the first quarter as TNT took a big 35-19 lead, which it was able to protect until the final buzzer. The KaTropa led by as many as 23 points in the game.
The KaTropa actually finished the first quarter with 18 unanswered points after trailing by 19-17 early in the game.
TNT coach Bong Ravena said the KaTropa were lucky to play a fatigued Beermen, who only had one day to prepare against the KaTropa following the grueling semifinal series against Rain or Shine.
“Good game tonight siguro because ‘yung San Miguel, galing sa game against Rain or Shine,” said Ravena. “I think ‘yung fatigue (naka-apekto) sa kanila. Suwerte kami na medyo pagod sila.”
Jones opened that run with a dunk and scored eight more after that on his way to missing a triple double by two assists in Game One.
Jayson Castro had 20 points, while Troy Rosario added 16 points to support Jones on offense in the Game One victory.
Chris McCullough had 33 points and 15 rebounds, while June Mar Fajardo had 23 points in the Beermen but were unable to contain Jones the whole game.
The closest the Beermen got was at 85-72 near the tail end of the third, but Don Trollano scored on a buzzer-beating lay-up to enter the fourth with a 15-point lead. Jones opened the final canto with a three and the KaTropa once again held a sizeable margin in the match.
