Back as TNT defensive lynchpin, Ryan Reyes is repaying Chot confidence

    Oct 28, 2021

TNT is one win away from the 2021 PBA Philippine Cup championship, and a big reason for that is a remnant from the franchise's glorious past.

Veteran guard Ryan Reyes sustained his season-long brilliance on Wednesday night, droppin 10 points and four steals in the Tropang GIGA’s 106-89 win over Magnolia that gave them a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven finals.

A six-time PBA champion, including five with TNT, the 38-year old guard was quick to play down his contribution in the resurgence of the flagship franchise of the MVP under comebacking coach Chot Reyes.

“Everyone is accountable for just playing hard, playing well. Anyone can get called up, put in the game, and give our best and we just play and give our all-out effort. That’s exactly what I did,” said the Fil-American veteran.

    Reyes rejuvenated under coach Chot

In his 14th season in the league, the former first-round pick of Sta. Lucia looks rejuvenated under Chot and is playing like he did in the 2012 Philippine Cup Finals when he had 10 steals in TNT’s 110-101 close-out win over Powerade.

On Wednesday night, Reyes' two steals provided the spark a 11-0 run late in the second quarter that gave TNT a 57-38 halftime lead.

“I just give my best especially with coach Chot giving the all-out confidence and trust. I just go out there and play hard,” said Reyes.

TNT is now on the verge of ending a six-year title drought. Aside from Reyes, other remnants of that last TNT champion team are Jayson Castro, Kelly Williams, and Ranidel De Ocampo, who is now part of the Tropang GIGA’s coaching staff.

Curiously, Reyes, Castro, and Williams continue to play crucial roles in a team that is now led by rookie Mikey Williams and Poy Erram.

Reyes, however, is warning the team not to get ahead of itself.

“Everyone is taking it one game at a time, focusing on this game, and the next game, and focusing on what needs to be done on the court," he said. "We get our recovery, rest off the court, time to play, and step up to play."
