SURPRISED as he was to be playing in the final minutes of his very first PBA game, Roger Pogoy relished the opportunity in TNT Katropa's 108-103 come-from-behind win over Barangay Ginebra on Sunday night.
The Cebuano shooting guard was one of seven players in double figures for the Texters with 15 points and was a solid presence down the stretch of the Philippine Cup game that went down to the wire at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
His two clutch free throws in the final 20 seconds gave TNT a 106-103 lead enroute to the team's first win in two outings.
"Shocked nga ako bakit ako ginamit nung crucial stage," admitted the Gilas cadet rookie out of Far Eastern University.
But he's not one to back down from the challenge.
"Gustung-gusto ko nga," he added. "Sobrang saya ko kasi binibigyan ako ng opportunity. Kaya hindi ko naman yun sasayangin."
It helped too, that coaches Nash Racela and Josh Reyes had previously handled him at FEU, where he won a UAAP championship last year.
Pogoy even said he considers both Racela and Reyes as father figures.
"Mataas ang kumpiyansa ko pag nakikita ko sila," he stressed. "Yung tiwala nila sa akin, siyempre alam na nila ang laro ko."
Pogoy went 5 of 9 from the field and grabbed three rebounds in 24 minutes of play.
Making the victory extra special was it came at the expense of the league's most popular ballclub.
"Sobrang saya. Alam naman natin ang Ginebra sa fans sila talaga ang malakas," Pogoy added.
