ANTIPOLO – TNT Katropa caught fire from long range as it outdueled Phoenix, 124-117, to sustain its sizzling start in the PBA Governors’ Cup on Friday night at the Ynares Center.

Mike Madanly typified the Texters’ hot shooting as the Asian import knocked down eight three-pointers to finish with 30 points in 32 minutes off the bench for his team, which broke loose from a tight game in the third quarter.

As a unit, the Texters buried a league-conference-high and matched a season-high 19 treys as they kept their unblemished slate intact with a six straight victory that solidified their hold on the top spot.

“We made the shots to break the game wide open,” Texters coach Jong Uichico said. “We know they can score, so…we also had to have a defensive mindset in the second half.”

The result spoiled another prolific outing from Fuel Masters import Eugene Phelps, who came a point shy from reaching the 50-point plateau for the second time this conference.

Ranidel de Ocampo hit three triples, Mychal Ammons and Larry Fonacier added two treys each, while Jayson Castro, Ryan Reyes, and Kris Rosales contributed one apiece for the Texters, halted the Fuel Masters’ two-game win streak as they dealt their victims their fourth loss in six games.

Ammons anchored the Texters down low with 22 points and 18 boards, but it was Madanly who shone brighter, scoring nine of his output in the third quarter, where they outscored the Fuel Masters, 36-16, to break a halftime deadlock and gain a 20-point lead entering the fourth.

One of the Syrian sniper’s treys came early in the fourth from left wing that gave the Texters their biggest lead at 103-77, enough cushion to weather a late comeback by the Fuel Masters.

Simon Enciso led the late comeback that fell short, scoring all but two of his 17 points in the final frame .
