TNT KaTropa gave Barangay Ginebra a dose of its own medicine as it stunned the Gin Kings with a come-from-behind 108-103 victory on Sunday to make it to the win column of the PBA Philippine Cup.
Facing a team known for memorable comebacks, the Texters turned the table as they erased a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to atone for an opening-game loss to Rain or Shine and give the Gin Kings a rude Season 42 reception.
Ranidel de Ocampo led the fightbac, before Kelly Williams put them ahead for good with an undergoal stab as the Texters proved they can win without resting superstar Jayson Castro.
“It feels good to finally get a win,” Texters assistant coach Josh Reyes said as he continued to fill in for Nash Racela. “This is still coach Nash’s team."
“I just want to give credit to the whole team: the other assistant coaches, our management, and the players for trusting this whole process, this transition,” he added.
De Ocampo almost singlehandedly lifted the Texters in climbing out of a 95-81 hole by pumping in 15 of his team-high 22 points in the final frame, the last three on triple that tied the game at 102 with a little less than two minutes left.
After Japeth Aguilar split his charities to give the Gin Kings back the lead, De Ocampo turned into a facilitator as he fed Williams for the go-ahead basket with 1:25 remaining.
Rookie Roger Pogoy and Larry Fonacier converted their charities to seal the deal.
LA Tenorio paced the Gin Kings with 27 points on top of six assists, three boards, and two steals, while Aguilar and Joe Devance added 15 apiece, although the latter missed a late triple that would’ve tied the game.
