KELLY Williams was a man on a mission on Thursday, making an impact on both ends of the floor in TnT Katropa's 101-94 win over San Miguel Beermen in Game Five of the PBA Philippine Cup semifinals.
The former league MVP, 35, hardly looked his age as he scored 18 points on top of seven rebounds and three steals while helping limit SMB star June Mar Fajardo to eight attempts - and 13 points - all evening.
Williams, however, was quick to deflect the credit, saying the task of trying to stop the three-time MVP can't be done by one man alone.
"Obviously June Mar is three-time MVP and it’s hard to stop him. So I’ll do the best I can," said the TNT veteran, crediting Nash Racela's scheme of putting multiple defenders on Fajardo.
"I know coach’s gonna do the best he can to drop the right schemes defensively. I know the guys got my back in that, too. So we’re looking forward to it," he added.
"If it was just one-on-one between Kelly and June Mar, well, it would be really hard to beat June Mar," said Racela. "So it took the whole team to be able to limit him today. It was again a total team effort for us."
Although the Texters are on the cusp of a return to the all-Filipino finals, Williams is under no illusion that they have broken the Beermen's spirit after the Game Five win.
This SMB team, afterall, had overcome higher odds in the past.
"I think it’s gonna be the same as it’s been the whole series. I think it’s gonna be rough, it’s gonna be tough," said Williams.
