Cone says Ginebra has 'nothing to apologize for' as Mercado insists refs called it right

TIM Cone didn’t see the non-call by the referees on a Sol Mercado traveling violation as a decider in Barangay Ginebra’s 92-81 win over Meralco Sunday night in the PBA Governors Cup finals.

Cone said he has found himself on the losing side of numerous bad calls in the past, which he said were all part of the breaks of the game.

Besides, he didn’t see in actual - and in replay – the travelling violation which the referees failed to call on Mercado, infuriating the entire Meralco bench as the Bolts trailed, 87-81, when the infraction was committed.

“We didn’t have anything to apologize for. This is part of the game, it happens. It didn’t change the game,” said Cone following the Game Five win that gave the Kings a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven title series and on the verge of finally ending a long, eight-year title drought.

“That’s part of the game. Anybody can complain about it all they want.”

Cone stressed the finals has been a ‘fairly-good, refereed series.’

“The team that’s leading will always be happy about the referee, and the team that’s losing is always gonna be unhappy about the referee. That’s the nature of refereeing,” added Cone.

Mercado himself doesn’t believe he committed a travelling violation.

“It didn’t look like I dragged my foot,” said the Fil-Am guard, who finished with eight points but scored six in the fourth quarter including a pressure-packed trey that kept a rallying Meralco at bay and gave the Kings an 85-77 lead with 2:08 remaining.

“There had been good calls, and bad calls throughout the whole series. You can’t live off with that one call,” he said. “From my personal thing, I feel like it was the right non-call.”
