AT least for one fleeting moment in the second half of Ginebra’s PBA Governors Cup road game against Meralco on Saturday, a shade of the old ‘Fast and Furious’ tandem resurfaced.
Mark Caguioa and JayJay Helterbrand turned back the hands of time and sparked a late third quarter charge which coach Tim Cone referred to as the ‘key moment’ of the Kings’ 107-93 win over the Bolts in the Petron Saturday Special at the Quezon Convention Center.
Helterbrand was fielded in by Cone with four minutes left in the period and the score tied at 68-all on a Jimmy Alapag three-pointer, and the former league MVP quickly made his presence felt as he sparked a 10-1 run that allowed the Kings to regain control of the match, 78-69.
The veteran guard highlighted the scoring blitz by converting a jumper off the glass, and then later feed Caguioa in transition for the easy basket.
Caguioa ended the third by completing a three-point play to give the Kings an 81-71 lead with a full quarter left.
Cone later acknowledged the crucial third quarter stretch regained back for Ginebra the momentum that paved the way for the league’s crowd darling to register their second straight win and third overall in four outings.
“I thought JayJay and Mark came out with a lot of energy there in the third quarter and kind of change the tempo for us, and gave us a big lift,” said an ecstatic Cone later.
“I thought that was a key moment of the game.”
