BARANGAY Ginebra registered its first and only win so far in the PBA Philippine Cup on the road, so it seems another out-of-town encounter could do the trick for the Gin Kings.
Whether or not the change in scenery will bring luck to the Gin Kings will be known as they travel to Biñan, Laguna where they face a fellow struggler Meralco on Tuesday at the Alonte Sports Center.
All of Ginebra’s three losses came in Metro Manila venues – the latest a 100-82 beating at the hands of San Miguel Beer at the Philsports Arena last Sunday, while the team’s lone victory happened in Dubai when it escaped Alaska, 93-92, last week.
So do the Gin Kings must really welcome another road game?
Not coach Tim Cone.
“Actually, we have played at a different venue in every one of our games,” the champion coach said in a text message to Spin.ph on the eve of the 7 p.m. tussle against the Bolts.
The Gin Kings opened their campaign with a loss to Star at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum, then surrendered a close decision to Barako Bull at the Mall of Asia Arena, before barging into the win column in a Middle East trip.
“I wish we could settle into one venue for a while so we could get a rhythm,” Cone said amid the league’s decision to hold its games outside the norm this week owing to lack of available venues.
Setting aside the venue, the Gin Kings simply hope to get back on the winning track after being a disappointment to their legions of fans early in the all-Filipino conference.
“(We’re) still not discouraged,” Cone said. “We’re not just at the same level as SMB yet and they showed us that we still have a long way to go before we can compete with them.”
“No doubt, we need to play better and harder and reward our loyal fans,” he added.
It’s easier said than done as the Gin Kings face another squad that has yet to live up to expectations – the Bolts, who are starving for any form of success after being the only winless team left in the season-opening conference with four losses.
Earlier, Barako Bull, coming off its 108-106 win over the Bolts, hopes to build a momentum as it takes on Mahindra (1-3) at 4:15 p.m.
