Tim Cone dreads thought of playing a lower-seeded SMB in playoffs

SAN Miguel will be a dangerous opponent in the PBA Commissioner's Cup playoffs, regardless of where the Beermen land in the seedings.

Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone has no doubt that San Miguel is capable of going deep in the playoffs, even if the Beermen end up in a twice-to-beat disadvantage or in a best-of-three quarterfinal series.

The Beermen have struggled to a 2-5 start to the midseason conference before finally picking up a win on Friday against Blackwater.

Even with a lowly record, San Miguel looked dangerous. Veteran Arwind Santos said they are confident of beating the top-ranked teams twice if they land either the seventh or eighth seed.

    Cone agreed.

“It depends on who they play,” Cone said. “They are capable of beating anybody at anytime. I wouldn’t want to be the number one seed playing San Miguel, that’s for sure.”

Neither does Cone want to face San Miguel in a best-of-three quarterfinal match-up, which is still a possibility.

“Obviously, we’d love to be top two, but that’s already decided. We just need to be in the highest seed that we can get and hope we avoid San Miguel coming into the playoffs,” said Cone with a laugh.

“We respect all the teams but we really don’t want to play San Miguel in quarterfinal match. No one wants to play San Miguel in the quarters,” said Cone.

“I think no one wants to play us in a quarterfinal match but if there is a chance to avoid them, we will certainly try. I don’t know how we can. But there’s a possibility to be playing San Miguel in the quarters,” Cone added.

Cone recognized that if there is a team that can bounce back from slow starts, it is the Beermen.

“The cream always rises to the top. I always say that … The last year of this conference, we were 1-5 or 1-6 and we finished as the sixth seed and we went on a run and won the championship. So early results don’t really matter that much.

"You want to get ahead, it’s an easier road to the playoffs. You always want to do that and find the easiest road to the championship but teams like San Miguel, they don’t worry getting off to slow starts.

“They know they are going to pick up and get there and it doesn’t matter really what seed they are going to get into because they are good to beat anybody at any given circumstances,” Cone said.
