In due time, Tim Cone expects Scottie Thompson to put up 'Westbrook numbers'

GINEBRA coach Tim Cone found a few more parallels for Scottie Thompson - one a local icon in terms of his rebounding and a current NBA superstar as far as his all-around play is concerned.

Thompson, compared by Cone to Johnny Abarrientos last year, reinforced his growing reputation as arguably already the best rebounding guard in the PBA, snaring 15 boards in the Gin Kings’ 99-90 win over Blackwater in the Philippine Cup.

That reminded Cone of Sonny Jaworski with regards to being a top rebounding playmaker.

“The only guy that I’ve seen that’s remotely like him is Sonny Jaworski,” Cone said of Thompson, who stands a shade below 6-1. “He’s still a few rungs below Sonny, but I think in terms of rebounding, they’re at par.”

“Scottie’s got a lot to prove before he can ever reach the heights of Sonny, but the rebounding part, he’s got that,” he added of the Digos City native, who was coming off a game where he hauled down 16 rebounds in a road win versus Meralco.

Thompson, who jumped to No. 3 in rebounds in the tournament at 10.9, behind slotmen June Mar Fajardo (15.4) and Raymond Almazan (11.6), completed his stats line with 13 points, seven assists, and two steals in 38 minutes.

And that prompted Cone to go as far as say that his prized ward could be like Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook in terms of putting up all-around numbers.

“Westbrook, he’s obviously a great rebounding guard as well and he’s putting up triple-doubles," Cone said of the all-world playmaker who was snubbed from the NBA All-Star game starting unit despite leading the league in triple-double with 21.

"I don’t want to put a lot of pressure on Scottie, but I think eventually, he could end up putting up some Westbrook numbers,” Cone said.

“Once he learns he could score – he can score – and be aggressive in that area, I think that will open up the game for him,” he added, before asking the press how many rebounds did Thompson end up.

“Only fifteen?” Cone joked. “I’m so used to sixteen, seventeen. Fifteen means one short.”
