SONNY Thoss plans to skip Gilas Pilipinas' training camp in Lithuania next month to undergo therapy, dimming his chances of making the team that will represent the country in the Fiba-Asia Men's Championship in August.
National coach Chot Reyes confirmed to Spin.ph on Wednesday night that Thoss has informed the Gilas staff of his plan to undergo therapy after the PBA season and skip the team's only overseas training camp ahead of the Manila tournament serving as a qualifier for the 2014 world championships.
“Nasa pool pa siya (Thoss). Pero hindi yata siya sasama sa Lithuania dahil kailangan daw niya magpa-therapy after the season,” said Reyes, whose squad will fly to the Baltic State for training as well as participation in a tournament from June 2-16.
“Hindi siya makakasama. So fourteen lang ang isasama namin,” the only five-time PBA Coach of the Year added.
Reyes, however, did not categorically state that Thoss' non-participation in the Lithuania tournament will rule him out of consideration for the Final 12.
Reyes' 17-man pool has already lost Kelly Williams and Jared Dillinger due to health issues.
“So (sa pool) dalawa na lang ang tatanggalin. Napakabigat nun. Ang sakit nun,” stressed Reyes, who is set to name his final 12-man lineup after Gilas' title defense in the the Jones Cup in Taipei this July.
As it is, Thoss has not been able to participate in Gilas' once-a-week practices on orders of mother team Alaska, which has said that it will only allow its big man to join the national team's Fiba-Asia buildup at the end of the Aces' Commissioner's Cup campaign.
Thoss was a member of the Gilas team that participated in two international tournaments last year.
Still, Reyes has ruled out adding more players to his pool, although he admitted being impressed with the performances of Petron's Arwind Santos, Rain or Shine's Beau Belga, and Air21's Nino 'KG' Canaleta in the PBA All-Star Game and in an exhibition match against the visiting Shanghai Sharks.
“Grabe ang nilaro ni Arwind, grabe ang nilaro ni Belga and KG, but there are other considerations,” said Reyes.
