Thoss key as Aces hit undersized Meralco where it hurts most

    Dec 13, 2012

ALASKA hopes to get the same effort from its big men the way they did in the series-opener as the Aces shoot for a sweep of the Meralco Bolts when they clash on Game Two of their PBA Philippine Cup best-of-three quarterfinals on Friday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Aces dominated behind the post plays of Sonny Thoss and Gabby Espinas en route to a 90-84 win in the series opener on Wednesday. Alaska goes for the killer blow at 5:15.

“It’s nice to dump the ball to Sonny. He was in his comfort zone. He was passing and doing the plays,” said Aces coach Luigi Trillo.

The 6-foot-7 Thoss dominated the paint, defending and scoring when given the opportunity, and finishing with a near double-double of 10 points and eight rebounds to go along with two shot blocks against Meralco’s undersized frontline.

The 6-4 Espinas, meantime, dominated rookie forward Clifford Hodge on defense en route to a 19-point performance on 8-of-11 shooting.

The big men’s fine performances lifted Alaska on a night that it failed to get the usual double-double numbers from top rookie Calvin Abueva, who fouled out early in the final period.
