    The Probables

    Feb 7, 2013

ON the eve of national coach Chot Reyes' annoucement of his selections for the Gilas Pilipinas team to the Fiba-Asia championships, took insights and inside information from the people that matter in the pro league on 'The Probables'  in the lineup.

Here's what we came up with, based on player positions:

POINT GUARD: According to insiders, veteran Talk n’ Text guard Jimmy Alapag will no longer be tapped for another tour of duty with Gilas. That the deadly 35-year-old shooter has been saddled by injuries over the past year ruled him out of what Reyes hopes would be a “quick and versatile” Philippine five.

That leaves Jason Castro and LA Tenorio as the top choices for the point guard spot, with Gabe Norwood stepping in when Reyes wants to go with a big lineup.

OFF-GUARD: No doubt, Gary David, described by Rain or Shine Assistant coach Caloy Garcia as “the best local player who can take quick pull-ups and attack the basket," is a shoo-in along with Jeff Chan and Larry Fonacier.

SMALL FORWARD: This position will be made up of the most versatile players in the lineup beginning with Kelly Williams, who can play the 3 and 4 positions. Jared Dillinger can slide from 2 and 3 with ease while Norwood, as his Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao had said, is perhaps the only player in the league who can play all five positions on the floor.

POWER FORWARD: This spot will have a dream cast in Ranidel de Ocampo, Marc Pingris and Arwind Santos, with Sonny Thoss a probable to slide down now that Gilas' rotation at the center spot has become deeper.

CENTER: The slot position no doubt is Marcus Douthit’s turf, but he is expected to have a lot more help this time with the arrival of June Mar Fajardo and Gregory Slaughter, who can be tapped from the Gilas cadet pool.

A darkhorse to make the roster is 'prodigal son' Japeth Aguilar, whose athleticism will be a plus factor for the Gilas Pilipinas' frontline.

A top team official even told the squad to be formed by Reyes "can no doubt can run, can shoot and can play multiple positions." This lineup fits the bill.
