PROLIFIC GlobalPort guard Terrence Romeo is committed to show that he can be more than just a scorer, saying he now finds joy in sharing the ball with open teammates.
The trigger-happy fourth-year guard has 14 assists in his first two games of the season, dishing off six in an opening win over Mahindra and issuing eight assists in Friday night's 91-84 GlobalPort win over Star at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Although Romeo said he's still in a period of adjustent, he revealed that there is really a conscious effort on his part to pass the ball more as he aims to become a better rounded player.
"May times pa rin na hinahanap ko 'yung scoring pero mas masarap na mahanap mo ang wide-open shots ng teammates mo at maka-contribute," said the former Far Eastern University star.
Romeo said new GlobalPort coach Franz Pumaren has prodded him to make the change and be more than just a one-dimensional player.
"Siya (Pumaren) naman 'yung nagre-remind sa akin palagi, actually before the conference started, 'yun sinabihan na niya ako na kailangan hindi ako maging one-dimensional player, kailangan ko mag-grow," Romeo said.
"It's a learning process pa rin sa akin pero naniniwala naman ako na matututunan ko 'yun."
The change has made the game a lot easier for him, Romeo said.
"'Yung eight assists ko hindi lang naman credit sakin, syempre credit din sa teammates ko na 'yun nga pag pinasa ko sa kanila, nasho-shoot nila at the same time, mas madali kapag nasho-shoot ng mga kasama ko dahil 'yung load nababawasan sakin," he added.
"Mas nakakapag-execute kami, mas maganda yung flow namin. Thankful pa rin ako kahit papaano nakaka-attract pa rin ako ng defense para ma-open sila."
But being both the scoring and assists leader had its drawbacks. Romeo is also leading the team in turnovers with nine over two games, a stretch where he scored 47 points in total.
Romeo, however, is bent on pushing on with the change.
"'Di ko alam eh, siguro sa turnovers wala na akong pakealam dun," he said. "'Di ko alam kung bakit ganun, mahirap na lang magsalita so bahala na sila. Basta ako I just give my best, kung ano 'yung alam kong makakatulong sa team, gagawin ko."
