PUERTO Princesa, Palawan - Terrence Romeo showed no fear as he outgunned veterans James Yap and JC Intal in the finals to crown himself the 2015 Three-Point Shootout king in the PBA All-Star Weekend on Friday at the Puerto Princesa City Coliseum.
The 5-foot-10 GlobalPort sophomore registered 18 points in both the preliminary and the final round to capture his first major individual PBA title, beating out Yap who failed to sustain his hot streak in the last two racks and settled for second with 14 points.
“Kinakabahan na nga ako even before pa mag-start ang finals eh, pero sa first rack ko, kahit bad start ako, pinilit ko na lang mag-focus,” said Romeo, who got an early birthday gift by bagging the top cash prize of P60,000.
The former UAAP Most Valuable Player turns 23 on March 16.
Intal, who like Romeo and Yap scored 18 points in the preliminary round, faded in the finals and finished with 11.
Romeo said winning against an array of veteran shooters at this stage of his pro career, was something he is proud of.
“Iyung kumpiyansa ko naman nandyan lang ano man mangyari. Saka proud lang ako, siyempre, PBA ito, three-point shootout,” he said, showing off his plaque to sportswriters.
“Pangarap ko lang before mag-champion sa Three-Point shootout pero ngayon, nanalo na ako,” he added.
Meralco gunner Mark Macapagal, who was gunning for his record fifth title, failed to get past the initial round after scoring just 11 points.
