THIS time, Terrence Romeo won both the battle and the war.
The deadly Globalport gunner exploded for a game-high 25 points and personally steered the Batang Pier to a shocking 98-77 win over Mark Caguioa and the Barangay Ginebra Kings in the PBA Philippine Cup Sunday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Romeo came off the bench to spark Globalport’s offense, scoring 13 points in the first half alone to set the tone for the ghastly rout.
The former UAAP Most Valuable Player capped his 22-minute performance by going 9-of-13 from the field in one of his best games as a pro which once again came at the expense of Caguioa and Ginebra.
“Medyo challenge ako kasi maraming fans 'yung Ginebra,” said Romeo when asked why he always gives his Sunday best when playing against the Kings. “Halos lahat ng players sa Ginebra superstar kaya pag nagkaron ka ng chance na makalaban yung mga superstars, mas malaking opportunity so I take that as malaking challenge.”
Still fresh in the minds of basketball fans was the shootout between Romeo and Caguiao in last year’s Philippine Cup. The Ginebra stalwart outscored the then rookie guard, 29-27, as the Kings won the game, 109-104.
This time, Romeo had the last laugh.
“Masaya yun,” he said recalling their match-up.
Caguioa was a non-factor for the Kings this time as he finished with only four points on 2-of-8 shooting from the field in 18 minutes of play.
Still, Romeo had nothing but utmost respect for the former league MVP.
“Si Kuya Mark any time naman yun kayang pumutok, kaya niyang mag explode,” he said of Caguioa. “May mga games lang talaga na medyo off. Wala na rin naman siyang dapat patunayan pa sa PBA.”
