The 22-year-old pride of Imus, Cavite is currently averaging 21.33 points per game as he lands in the Top 10 in the scoring deparment of the current Governors Cup in the company of seven imports.
His offensive exploits has made many believe he’s a shoo-in in the 26 player-pool Gilas coach Tab Baldwin had already named but is still being withheld.
For Romeo though, he’d rather not expect at the moment and just wait for the official announcement to be made.
But he did admit playing for the national team has been one of his biggest dreams.
There was excitement in Romeo’s eyes when he revealed to Spin.ph that former GlobalPort coach Eric Gonzales informed him about coach Baldwin asking from him the phone number of the GlobalPort star player.
Pero wala pa namang tawag sa akin,” he said.
“Pero yung motivation ko lagi namang andun. Sana makasama talaga ako,” added Romeo.
The forme Far Eastern University stalwart admitted that since a possible stint with Gilas was first brought up to him, he has taken it upon himself to religiously work on other facets of his game, especially hiss passing skills.
KG Canaleta, the former Gilas forward and Romeo’s teammate with the Philippine 3x3 team that competed in the Fiba world 3x3 championship, admitted not being surprised by reports that the shifty Globalport guard is being considered to become part of Gilas team seeing action in the Fiba-Asia Men’s Championship set this September.
Nino Reyes, the handler of Romeo, is confident the high-scoring guard will make the Gilas main pool owing to his skills and talent.
“I think he fits the needs of the team. Terrence is a good ball handler, he can create for his teammates and he has a deadly outside shooting not to mention his superb slashing prowess. He’d bring a good dimension to the offense of the team,” said Reyes.
Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) executive director Sonny Barrios bared that the initial 26 lists of pro players considered for the Gilas pool is still subject to last-minute changes.
“Adjustable pa 'yang list na 'yan eh. Kasi alam ko gusto pa niyang (Baldwin) makita ang third conference kasi pwede pa siyang magpasok ng ibang players na magpapakita ng maganda ngayon,” said Barrios, who said he himself has not even seen the list made by the Gilas mentor.
Tapos we want to give the players full focus pa sa mother teams nila sa ongoing PBA conference,” he added.
