GLOBALPORT turned to its dynamic duo as it cruised past Rain or Shine, 117-99, on Sunday night at the Cuneta Astrodome to clinch a playoff berth in the PBA Philippine Cup.

Terrence Romeo erupted for a career-high 44 points highlighted by eight triples in 37 minutes while Stanley Pringle added 28 points, six boards, and four assists as the Batang Pier turned a close game into a blowout in the second half.

JR Quinahan was the third player in twin digits for the Batang Pier with 11 points on top of three boards, two steals, one block, and one steal as he turned into a villain against his former team.

As a result, the Batang Pier finished its elimination-round campaign with a 6-5 win-loss record, while handing the Elasto Painters their third straight loss and fifth overall in 10 games, leaving them in a must-win situation in their last game to avoid playoff complications.

“It’s a Terrence Romeo-Stanley Pringle story, but, of course, you have to give credit also to our defense,” GlobalPort coach Franz Pumaren said. “Our guys were able to step up.”

The Batang Pier defense was most evident in the third quarter where they outscored the E-Painters, 25-15, to pull away and maintain a double-digit lead as ROS came no closer than 11 points in the final frame.

After seeing the E-Painters make a last stand to pull to within 90-79, the Batang Pier retaliated with a strong finishing kick, embarking on 21-9 run behind Romeo to coast to the win.

Pringle scored 11 in the third quarter, before Romeo, who involved his teammates early with four of his six assists in the first half, took over in the payoff period where he scored 19 of his output.

The result spoiled a vintage performance from ROS veteran Jeff Chan, who finished with 26 points, four boards, four assists, and two steals as Jay Washington wound up as the only other E-Painters who reached double-digit scoring with 11 markers.
