TERRENCE Romeo came into the new PBA season fully recharged after a long offseason - a timely break after playing non-stop basketball for more than a year.
The end result was obvious. The league’s two-time scoring champion torched Mahindra for 29 big points in a 97-75 victory by the Batang Pier to kick off their Philippine Cup campaign on Friday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Romeo went 9 of 13 from the field, including 4 of 6 from three-point range. For good measure, he added six assists and two rebounds.
“Pinahinga ko ng mabuti yung sarili ko kasi parang sore na yung buong katawan ko,” said the shooting guard from Far Eastern University. “Lumabas muna ako sa basketball world.”
The one-time UAAP MVP has not rested since the offseason last year when he spent the PBA break playing in the FIBA 3x3 tournament, and later suited up for Gilas Pilipinas.
So when a small window of opportunity presented itself to him, Romeo grabbed the chance.
And it helped him reinvigorate a lot coming into the new season.
“Nakatulong yun kasi alam, mo pag napahinga ko yung sarili ko, then babalik akong magpakundisyon siguro mas iwas sa injury,” he said.
“Unlike yung sobrang kundisyon mo every time, parang sunog na yung katawan mo, tapos parang hindi mo alam sobrang pagod at sobrang hina na pala,” he said “Yun ang mga ina-avoid ko.”
His physical conditioning is eventually aimed at helping Globalport reach the Promised Land.
“Gusto ko talagang makapunta ng finals,” he said. “Gusto ko namang mabigyan ng ibang dimension yung basketball ko, na maka-contribute naman ako sa ibang bagay para manalo yung team. Gusto kong makapaglaro (kasi) sa finals.”
