GLOBALPORT coach Pido Jarencio's decision to bench Terrence Romeo in the second half worked wonders during the Batang Pier’s 117-104 overtime win over Alaska in the PBA Governors’ Cup on Tuesday.
Romeo, the Batang Pier's leading local scorer, curiously rode the bench at a time when the Aces mounted a comeback and even took the lead briefly during the payoff period.
The GlobalPort sophomore came out with just four minutes gone by in the third quarter, at the seven-minute, 49-second mark specifically, for Omar Krayem, and didn’t return until the start of the overtime period.
But Jarencio said he simply decided to stick with prolific rookie Stanley Pringle, who delivered by scoring 10 of his 24 points in the payoff period to force extra session. Romeo only had four points until that point.
“Kay Stanley tayo nung regulation,” the collegiate champion coach said. “Pero nung overtime binunot ko na si Terrence at nag-deliver naman kahit papaano.”
“Overall, nag-contribute naman lahat,” he added.
Romeo unleashed a flurry when he was finally let loose as the Batang Pier rising star scattered 10 points inside the last two minutes of overtime, including two on a breakaway slam he sneaked in with the game already a foregone conclusion.
“Pumasok lang yung tira ko. Swerte lang din siguro,” said Romeo, who finished with 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting, three assists, one steal in 25 minutes.
