RR Garcia may have finally found a PBA team he can truly call home.
After lurking behind the shadow of former Far Eastern University backcourt mate Terrence Romeo at Globalport, Garcia has found a new spark in his career the way he’s been playing for Barako Bull.
The sixth overall pick in the 2013 Rookie Draft showed on Tuesday night what he can do in an Energy uniform after scoring a league career-best 22 points in a 92-87 win over NLEX in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena.
And he’s got veteran teammates Mick Pennisi and fellow FEU alumnus Denok Miranda to thank for in his renewed career.
“Si Mick saka si Denok, kasi leader talaga yan eh, saka lagi nya (Miranda) ako ina-advise kung ano pagkakamali ko,” said Garcia following the game.
At 24, Garcia is one of several young players currently suiting up for Barako Bull rookie coach Koy Banal.
But Pennisi, the 39-year-old big man, insisted the former UAAP Most Valuable Player should be vocal once he’s inside the court.
“Si Mick din, beteranong beterano na. Sinasabi niya sa akin lagi na kailangan maging vocal ako diyan kasi yun ang kulang sa akin,” Garcia added.
Although Garcia now enjoys career-high averages of 10.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assists, the second year isn’t resting on his laurels.
“Di pa naman ako kuntento, kailangan pa mag-improve, although sa akin siguro, grabe ang tiwala na binibigay ni coach,” he explained.
With one more game coming up for Barako in Petron’s Saturday Special against defending champion Purefoods in Dipolog City, Garcia said it will take a collective effort from all his teammates to get the much-needed win to enter the playoffs with more confidence.
