THERE could be a surprise leader in the PBA Philippine Cup at the end of Sunday’s doubleheader where Terrafirma battles defending champion Meralco. Here is a preview of the twinbill.

TERRAFIRMA VS. MERALCO

When: Sunday, April 6. 5 p.m.
Where: Ninoy Aquino Stadium

Going for solo leadership

Meralco and Terrafirma will be seeking the early lead in the Philippine Cup. Last Friday, the Bolts defeated Converge, 91-89, on a Chris Newsome game-winner, while the Dyip opened the conference with a stunning 95-87 victory over Phoenix.

Reigning champs starts campaign with a win

Meralco opened its title retention bid with a two-point victory, but head coach Luigi Trillo said the Bolts still have work to do especially after giving up 34 points to Converge in the first quarter, turning the ball over 17 times, and shooting just 39 percent from the field.

    Terrence Romeo renaissance?

A lot fitter and a lot more prepared, Terrence Romeo was back to his old ways when he had 17 points in the Dyip’s victory over the Fuelmasters. Romeo had 14 of those points in the third quarter where the Dyip had a 30-16 advantage. Can he repeat his play in the match-up against the Bolts?

    Where: Ninoy Aquino Stadium

    Converge blows big lead

The FiberXers dropped their first game despite leading by as many as 20 points in the first quarter, and up by six in the final moments of the match-up. Converge also shot 43.6 percent from the field in that contest.

    Heading’s absence being felt?

Converge played its first game without Jordan Heading and it looks like they are already missing his presence from the arc. The FiberXers shot just 4 of 19 from threes, their lowest since going 3 of 16 from the same distance in their second game of the Commissioner’s Cup this season against Eastern last November 29.

What Ballungay will do for an encore?

A player to watch in this ballgame is Kai Ballungay, who had a huge outing for Phoenix in its first game by pouring on 30 points and 15 rebounds. Fans have been waiting for the No. 4 pick in the Season 49 draft to show this kind of performance, and a repeat will boost Phoenix’s chances of winning this game against Converge.
