TERRENCE Romeo channeled his inner Steph Curry on Friday night when he torched NLEX with a career-high eight three-pointers that unfortunately went for naught as GlobalPort lost, 110-105, in their Commissioner’s Cup duel.
It was an occasional long-range explosion for the Batang Pier star, who, loves to attack the basket more and bank on his ball-handling brilliance to break down his defenders and get free for baskets.
Romeo is one of the most flamboyant scorers in the PBA today and, for the longest time, has been imitating his other NBA idol, Kyrie Irving, as far as that ball-handling facet of his game is concerned.
That’s why when he was asked by a fan, John Carlo Gervacio, during his turn to take over the PBA’s official Twitter account on who between Curry and Irving has the better handles, Romeo never hesitated in his answer.
“Kyrie,” he tweeted.
Pressed to expound on his response later, the former Far Eastern University star said he has always admired the ball-handling skills of Irving and the shooting of Curry.
“Magaling talaga yung handles ni Kyrie,” Romeo said. “Simula nung nakita ko siya nung rookie year niya sa NBA, talagang sumobrang hanga na ako sa handles niya.”
“Pero sa shooting, syempre iba pa rin yung Steph,” he was quick to add of the Golden State superstar and reigning NBA MVP. “So ang ina-idolize ko sa shooting ay si Steph tsaka kung paano siya maglaro.”
According to chief statistician Fidel Mangonon III, Romeo became just the 22nd player in the league history and 12th among active player to make at least eight triples in one game.
Still, Romeo picks Irving as the one with better ball-handling skills.
“Kung handles lang naman, mas magaling para sa akin si Kyrie,” he said.
So much so that Romeo wore Irving’s No. 2 when he made his Gilas Pilipinas debut in the Jones Cup in Taipei last year.
“Kung papalarin ulit ako sa Fiba, number two na ako,” said Romeo, who wore No. 11 in the Fiba Asia Championship. Sana makuha ko ulit.”
With handles like Irving’s and a shooting touch like Curry’s, no wonder Romeo is almost unstoppable.
