BARANGAY Ginebra playmakeer LA Tenorio said he might skip Smart Gilas 2.0’s stint in the Dubai International tournament in January so as not to aggravate an elbow injury which he has been nursing since his days with Alaska.
“Kaya ko naman maglaro pero siyempre, ayaw ko lang kasi mabugbog lalo yung elbow ko," Tenorio, hero of Gilas' conquest of the Jones Cup in Taipei and a fourth-place finish in the Fiba Asia Cup, told Spin.ph.
"Mas importante naman ang Jones Cup saka yung Fiba Asia Cup, so iniisip ko skip ko na lang muna siguro yung Dubai na tournament and siguro sa Hong Kong ako lalaro,” he added, referring to another tournament lined up for the national team early next year.
The 5-8 Tenorio said he hyperextended while playing for the Aces and played through the injury during the Jones Cup and Fiba Asia Cup as well as in his debut conference with Ginebra, which ended with a loss to Rain or Shine in a best-of-three quarterfinal series that went the distance.
The 28-year-old said he could also use the rest, having played non-stop from the offseason with Gilas to his new team in the pro league.
“Di lang elbow ko ang kino-consider ko, siyempre, baka mag wear and tear na rin ako dahil sa kakalaro, so parang ayaw ko na sana i-risk. Ipahinga ko lang. Pag tinatamaan kasi sa laro, sumasakit siya, kaya nitong conference, kapag masakit, nagpe-pain reliever na lang ako,” he said.
So far, only Air21 forward KG Canaleta has confirmed to join the Smart Gilas 2.0 practice set on Friday under the guidance of national coach Chot Reyes.
Tenorio said he will still show up for the first practice on Friday to talk to Reyes.
The invited PBA players will be joining the cadet pool led by Greg Slaughter, Garvo Lanete, Nico Salva, Kiefer Ravena, Matt Rosser, Jake Pascual and Kevin Alas.
The national squad will play its first international tournament for 2013 in the Dubai International championships scheduled from January 10-20.
PBA commissioner Chito Salud, earlier said, the pro league has pledged to lend players from the six teams that failed to make it to the ongoing Philippine Cup semifinals.
However, Gilas still needs to convince players in the pool to make themselves available for drafting.
