Tenorio looking to involve Slaughter, Japeth more in game against Texters

    Dec 7, 2013

BARANGAY Ginebra tries to move on from a recent shocking loss to Meralco when it tangles with three-time champion Talk ‘N Text in a huge Sunday match up in the PLDT myDSL-PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Gin Kings (3-1) will try to put behind them their 100-87 setback against the Bolts in their 5:15 p.m. encounter against the Tropang Texters.

Ranged against a small Talk ‘N Text frontline, Ginebra guard LA Tenorio said the Kings must find ways to get their Twin Towers of Japeth Aguilar and Greg Slaughter involved in the paint in every given play so they could dictate the tempo of the game.

“For me, might as well na ibang team ang mag-adjust sa amin kesa kami mag-adjust sa kanila (Texters). We just have to find ways to pound the ball inside and look for our big men because that’s one advantage we have,” Tenorio said.

The Ginebra star playing small to try to match up with the speed of the Bolts was simply deviating from the identity the Kings have been building this season, said Tenorio as he echoed the words of rookie Greg Slaughter who wants the Kings to impose their size advantage against opponents.

“Pretty much the same team ang Talk ‘N Text like Meralco. They don’t have a legitimate big guy, so we have to be ready kasi lahat ng teams gagawin na sa amin yan. Yung babagalan nila yung pace, dahil pag malaki kami, magma-maliit sila,” he added.

Forced to use a small roster after losing big men Cliff Hodge and Reynel Hugnatan to injuries, the Bolts capitalized on their quickness to take away Ginebra’s vaunted inside presence.

Slaughter was limited to just 21 minutes in the loss to Meralco as Ginebra coach Ato Agustin opted to go with a smaller unit in the second half, a move that backfired as the Bolts led by as many as 25 points en route to the giant victory.

Meantime, Talk ‘N Text coach Norman Black recognizes the need to slow down Ginebra’s veteran guards led by Tenorio and Mark Caguioa.

Tenorio has been the Kings’ chief facilitator, averaging a league-best 9.0 assists  per contest, while Caguioa norms 16.7 points on an efficient 51 percent shooting clip from the floor.
