MARQUS Blakely has actually won this same tournament last year with San Mig Coffee.
But the feeling is much different this time.
The Governors’ Cup victory by the Mixers completed a grand slam for the franchise, and Blakely is overwhelmed by the fact that he helped the franchise claim the third title of the triple crown.
“I guess when you first taste it, you understand what it takes and the support you have behind it. But to win the grand slam, go down in history, to get down in the history. This is just…”
“Nothing I really can’t say about,” Blakely continued. “You can’t really compare.”
Blakely scored 12 of his 20 points in the second half to go along with his 16 rebounds and eight assists in a 92-89 Mixers win over the Painters in Game Five.
“Marqus coming back, back-to-back for him, that’s incredible,” San Mig coach Tim Cone said. “He started it and finished it for us.”
Blakely noted it was a collective effort by the Mixers that earned them the grand slam.
“It’s all of us. It’s a team effort for four conferences now. It just shows you the maturity of the team and how we play together. It takes a lot to win one championship, let alone three in a row, let alone four in a row.
“The target on our back is a lot bigger especially at the start of the conference. It was huge to overcome it and get this win,” Blakely said, adding that he wants to come back to the Philippines for a third stint with the Mixers.
“Every time that they want me to come back, I’ll come back. For now, I’ll go home, talk to my agent, and get our next move,” Blakely said.
