YENG Guiao wasn't conscious about having an all-five San Miguel Beermen playing together for Team Pilipinas at one time in its tune-up match against Jordan on Monday night.
Guiao said he didn't do it on purpose but simply by random when he fielded Christian Standhardinger, Arwind Santos, Alex Cabagnot, Marcio Lassiter, and June Mar Fajardo all at the same time, a combination that didn't escape the attention of the packed crowd at the Meralco gym.
"I was not even thinking of them as San Miguel, Talk 'N Text, or Rain or Shine. Everything was random," he said following the nationals' 98-92 loss to the visiting team.
"I was just trying combinations. I was experimenting on some combinations. I was experimenting on the kind of chemistry some guys will have with some other guys," he added. "Hindi ko na nano-notice kung apat o limang San Miguel yung nasa loob."
But it was the San Miguel connection which actually rallied the team back from an early 25-13 deficit.
Before Fajardo was fielded back, Beau Belga was the only non-San Miguel player on the court that had Standhardinger, Cabagnot, Lassiter, and Santos.
The quintet went on and instigate a 10-0 blast to end the first quarter just trailing, 25-23.
By the time Fajardo came in early in the second period, the nationals were already holding to a 38-32 lead.
But the combination didn't last long as Ricci Rivero came in to replace Cabagnot.
The Fab Five didn't play together again after that.
