THERE is an ongoing debate within the family of a well-known basketball team owner whose children want to sell their PBA franchise while the father reportedly seemed keen on keeping it because of his love of the game.
A source close to the PBA team said the children want the family to leave basketball and put their energy and resources on their business, which the source did not want to reveal as it will identify the team which they don't want to do at this time.
SOURCES SAY What prompted Freddy Gonzalez to resign from PFF post
The decision of whether to stay or not apparently is in the hands of the patriarch.
“Yung mga anak ang ayaw na talaga. Pero yung tatay siyempre ayaw (umalis),” the source told SPIN.ph.
The team owner has long been known to truly love basketball and though it has not been consistently winning championships, the franchise had won several titles in the past.
“Baka manghina yun kung mawawala yung team niya sa basketball,” the source added, worried that the owner's health might be affected by a departure from the league.
The team owner, which the source also did not identify, is also a known supporter of other sports programs in the country.

Creamline's curious setter situation
CREAMLINE had four setters on its roster just two months ago in the 2024-25 PVL All-Filipino Conference. It’s now down to just two for the 2025 PVL on Tour.
They are two-time PVL best setter Kyle Negrito and Mafe Galanza who are listed as active players for the Cool Smashers in the league’s two-month preseason run set to start soon.
What happened?
Creamline did not include Jia de Guzman in its PVL on Tour squad with four more months left in the national team season.

And while not yet formally announced, the team's former reserve setter Bea Bonafe has moved to Akari, deciding not to renew her Creamline contract which is expiring this month.
The surprise absentee for Creamline, however, is veteran setter Rhea Dimaculangan-Villarete. The 34-year-old playmaker joined the Cool Smashers ahead of their 2025 AVC Women’s Champions League campaign in late April after a six-month volleyball hiatus.
She signed a contract with Creamline that runs until the end of 2025. But SPIN.ph learned that Villarete took a leave of absence from the team before the PVL on Tour went underway due to undisclosed personal reasons.
She still has a contract with Creamline which will run from late September to early December. - John Mark Garcia
