TALK ‘N Text broke away from a tight first half behind its vaunted defense as it routed an ambitious Globalport side, 99-79 on Wednesday night in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
After allowing the Batang Pier to score 45 points in the first two quarters, the Tropang Texters held down their opponents to just 24 points in the last two periods to post the runaway victory.
The Batang Pier failed to sustain their fine start by shooting just 30.9 percent (25-of-81) from the field in the gameas they fell to 2-2.
“We were able to accomplish some of the things we wanted to do in this game. After last game, we were dead last in our defense. So I told the guys to come up with a good defensive effort tonight,” Talk ‘N Text coach Norman Black said after the game.
The Tropang Texters, who booked their second straight win after dropping a 92-99 decision to the Meralco Bolts during their conference debut, gave up an average of 91 points in their first two outings.
Globalport’s top local gunner Gary David finished with 19 points, but struggled on 4-of-20 shooting while big man Japeth Aguilar’s much-anticipated match against his former team, ended in a disappointment.
The former Talk ‘N Text back-up, dealt to Globalport prior to the start of the conference, finished with just four points, way below his 15-point per-game average.
“For us, this was a big test since a lot of people are trying to make a big deal with Japeth. But we started to put a small guy on him in Ryan Reyes to at least slow him down in the beginning, which we felt worked,” Black said.
Talk ‘N Text import Keith Benson won his personal duel with Globalport’s Justin Williams as he finished the game with 20 points, 19 rebounds and five blocks.
The 6’9” athletic Williams led the Batang Pier with 19 point 15 boards and three blocks. But he was just 9-of-17 from the free throw line.
Jason Castro led all Tropang Texters local scorers with 19 points while Jimmy Alapag added 15 and seven assists.
