TALK ‘N Text leaned on a monster third-quarter effort from import Ivan Johnson to manhandle San Miguel Beer, 113-93, and regain a share of the lead in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The 6-foot-7 Johnson banged in 13 of his game-high 41 points in the team’s whirlwind third-quarter offensive that saw the Tropang Texters outscore the Beermen, 33-14, and rip the game wide open.
Johnson’s rim-rattling slam dunk with under a minute left in the third canto gave the Tropang Texters an 88-60 bubble, sealing the team's seventh win in 10 games and a share of first place with Purefoods Star.
The top two teams at the end of the single-round eliminations will earn a twice-to-beat advantage come the playoffs.
On the other hand, the Beermen, who reigned supreme in the Philippine Cup, dropped to 3-7 as they all but kissed their playoff hopes goodbye.
“We were able to get the same effort from the players from Saturday’s game, though we lost that game. Kaya it’s good na na-carry over because they know how important the game is today,” said Talk ‘N Text coach Jong Uichico, citing a 118-117 triple-overtime loss to Purefoods Star in Davao over the weekend.
It was sweet revenge for Talk ‘N Text, which suffered a 4-0 sweep at the hands of San Miguel during the Philippine Cup semis. The Beermen went on to beat the Alaska Aces in seven games to capture their first all-Filipino title since 2001.
Rookie Matt Ganuelas-Rosser banged in a PBA career-high 22 points, while Ranidel de Ocampo added 17 for Talk ‘N Text.
Arizona Reid led the Beermen with 32 points and 18 rebounds. June Mar Fajardo added 20.
