TALK ‘N Text forward Jay Washington admitted he is motivated to face his former team San Miguel Beer starting on Friday when their PBA Philippine Cup best-of-seven semifinal series starts at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The 6-foot-7 Washington actually spent his best years as a pro with San Miguel Beer, earning two Best Player of the Conference awards and two championships in five seasons with the team from 2008 to 2013.
The former Eckerd College standout, however, was traded to GlobalPort last year before eventually returning to Talk ’N Text during the offseason. Washington spent his first three seasons as a pro with Talk 'N Text before being traded in 2008 to San Miguel Beer.
“It’s always a little extra motivation (going up against San Miguel). I’m sure they’re gonna have a good game plan for us, but we’re gonna focus in and I know the coaches will give us a good game plan,” Washington told Spin.ph.
Washington scored 19 points, spiked by three triples, grabbed five rebounds and issued two assists as Tropang Texters scored a 107-101 elimination round win over the Beermen two weeks ago.
The 33-year-old Fil- Am forward is averaging 10.4 points and 5.3 rebounds while shooting 33 percent from beyond the arc, helping the Tropang Texters make it to the Final Four for the eighth time since the 2012 Philippine Cup.
“It’s been in a while (playing in the semifinals). But it feels great,” said Washington.
“This is what I exactly envisioned when I became a part of this team. It’s what it’s all about. The format is kinda crazy to bring the game to a knockout game like that, but I’m glad we’re able to pull it out,” he added.
“Now, we’re gonna be in a series with San Miguel but that’s exactly what we want it to be.”
