RAIN or Shine hopes to pounce on team-in-transition Talk ‘N Text when the two teams tangle in the main game of the PBA Governors Cup road show on Wednesday at the Alonte Sports Center in Binan, Laguna.
The two squads are coming off contrasting performances. The Elasto Painters chalked up their first win in three games following their 119-97 rout of Globalport Batang Pier on Sunday.
On the other hand, the Tropang Texters suffered their first defeat on Monday, a 91-103 decision at the hands of the Alaska Aces after opening the tournament with a 105-99 victory over sister team Meralco.
Talk ‘N Text had to play all-Filipino against Alaska due to import Othyus Jeffers' contract glitch in the NBA.
Jeffers debuted with 38 points and 13 rebounds but will now be replaced by former NBA veteran Rodney Carney.
The 6-foot-4 Carney, who played for five seasons in the NBA, is set to arrive on Tuesday midnight and will join the team in its game Wednesday evening.
Carney, selected 16th overall pick by the Chicago Bulls, played for the Philadelphia 76ers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Golden State Warriors, and Memphis Grizzlies.
“He (Carney) is a good defender who can score slashing to the basket. We are hoping he can step in and help the team right away despite coming in on short notice,” said Black heading to the team’s 8 p.m. match against Rain or Shine.
Black said the team can sure feel the loss of the 6-foot-3 Jeffers, the 2014 co-MVP of the NBA D-League, who he said has a “good attitude.”
“Losing Othyus is a big loss because of his talent and good attitude, but because the NBA won't release his rights until June 30 we were forced to make a change,” explained Black, whose team is just two weeks removed from a runner-up finish in the recent Commissioner’s Cup.
“We will go out and do our best to win the game against Rain or Shine,” he added.
Meantime, Rain or Shine gunner Jeff Chan said coach Yeng Guiao has emphasized the importance of playing with consistency on both ends of the floor.
“Sinabi lang uli ni coach na 'yung aggressiveness namin sa last game (against Globalport) eh madala namin sa Talk ‘N Text,” said Chan, who scored 19 points and spiked by three triples in the team’s 22-point demolition of the Batang Pier.
But even if Carney is expected to still be in jetlag mode, Chan said the Elasto Painters cannot afford to be complacent, owing to the solid core of Talk 'N Text’s veteran players.
“Matagal na kasi sila magkakasama. Buo na sila saka nandun na rin `yung sistema nila,” added the left-handed Rain or Shine shooter.
