TALK ‘N Text relied on the huge endgame baskets of Danny Seigle and Jay Washington to outlast San Miguel Beer, 107-101, in the PBA Philippine Cup on Friday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Omitted from the league's '40 Greatest Players' list early in the week, Seigle reminded fans - as well as former team San Miguel - how good he still is by coming off the bench to score 12 points for Talk 'N Text.
The 6-foot-7 Seigle was at his best in the endgame, scoring on a layup before delivering another basket off the outstretched arms of Arwind Santos to give Talk 'N Text a 100-96 lead after a long chase.
Washington then delivered the coup de grace - a three-pointer from the deep left corner that sealed Talk 'N Text's eighth win in 11 games and kept the team in the hunt for an outright place in the semifinals.
As things stand now, Talk ‘N Text can secure one of two automatic spots in the semifinals if Barangay Ginebra beats Rain or Shine (8-2) on Sunday.
On the other hand, San Miguel (8-2) can still clinch an outright semifinal seat if it beats winless Blackwater on Tuesday at the close of the elimination round.
Although Washington and Jayson Castro led the Tropang Texters with 19 points apiece, Seigle proved to be the catalyst for the team’s huge victory over the Beermen after banging in nine points in the last quarter.
Talk ‘N Text coach Jong Uichico lauded Seigle for playing true to form, while reiterating that the 1999 PBA Rookie of the Year should have been part of the PBA’s list of '40 Greatest Players.'
“He’s (Seigle) always ready to play,” said Uichico. “Yes, he has his deficiencies, but he knows how important the games are and I believe he should be in the top 40.
"That’s just my opinion,” he added.
Chris Lutz exploded for a personal conference-best 25 points while June Mar Fajardo finished with 18 points and nine rebounds, putting an end to his string of nine double-double performances this season.
