TAB Baldwin has been removed from his positions as assistant coach and consultant of TnT KaTropa in the PBA, sources told SPIN.ph on Thursday.
Baldwin's ouster came just weeks after he made controversial comments in a Coaches Unfiltered podcast wherein he lashed out at the PBA's single-import format, called its coaches 'tactically immature,' and alleged that imports are given 'rules latitude' by referees and league officials.
TNT, the flagship franchise of the MVP Group's three teams in the PBA, informed the league of its decision to cut Baldwin's ties with the ballclub in a letter submitted on Tuesday, sources added.
TnT team manager Gabby Cui later confirmed to SPIN.ph about the move of the franchise.
The KaTropa management, however, didn't cite any reason behind the decision or made any indication that it had anything to do with the controversial comments.
Acting swiftly after Baldwin's comments sparked furor among league coaches, Commissioner Willie Marcial fined the American-New Zealander P75,000 and suspended him for three games for the comments deemed 'detrimental to the league.'
Despite the ouster, Baldwin still holds a sensitive position as program director of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), tasked to oversee the preparation of the Gilas Pilipinas team to the 2023 Fiba World Cup.
Baldwin is also the head coach of Ateneo, which ruled the last three UAAP seniors basketball tournaments.
It is not known how the fallout will affect Baldwin's other positions in the group, although sources bared top officials are sensitive of their relations with Fiba, where Manny V. Pangilinan is a member of the Central Board.
During the same podcast, Baldwin also hit out at Fiba for its 'criminal' eligibility rules.
