GILAS Pilipinas coach Tab Baldwin has set a deadline for players who are outside looking in at making the national pool.
While not mentioning names, the American-Kiwi tactician has given players like Marc Pingris until Gilas returns from its trip from Estonia next week to attend practice.
Pingris once again didn’t show up for practice for the second straight night on Friday amid a report that the Star Hotshots forward was coming in to excuse himself from training.
“If we don’t get anybody in by the time we get back from Estonia, to me it’s counterproductive to bring anybody in at that point,” Baldwin said after practice on Friday night.
Gilas will take part in a three-day pocket tournament in Estonia from August 20 and will come back a few days later.
“It’s not a definitive decision, but I’m prepared to put that (deadline) out there now and probably defend that position later on,” Baldwin said. “It just gets too late.”
Baldwin, though, will surprisingly still make an exception on San Miguel Beer cornerstone June Mar Fajardo, who’s out with a plantar fasciitis injury.
“We understand that his injury is one of those nagging things that don’t have a timetable and because it doesn’t have a timetable, I’m not going to put a timetable on him,” Baldwin said.
“Eventually we have to say it’s too late,” he added. “But right now, because it’s an injury situation for him and nothing else, I’d say the door will stay open for him longer than it will be for anybody else.”
Baldwin declined to say if he has talked with Fajardo, Pingris, or any player who has yet to show up.
“I’m not going to discuss my communication with any of the players except for the ones that I have in camp,” he said.
